Where West Meets East
Large, glossy boulders of coal, native beech trees covered
in honeydew and a bubbling stream are key elements of Solid
Energys garden at next months Ellerslie International
Flower Show.
Capturing the mood and essence of the South Islands
West Coast, Microcosms: Sustaining the Worlds within Our World
is designed by Christchurch landscape designer and The Road
to Ellerslie television presenter, Dan
Rutherford.
The garden features sculptured orbs, made of minerals and
plant material, which breathe with light and sound to symbolise
the cyclic nature of the ecosystems, microcosms and ecologies
of the New Zealand landscape.
Dan Rutherford says by using large coal boulders in the garden
there is a strong reflective context which creates a real
sense of energy. Microcosms is a garden visitors to Ellerslie
will want to take time to appreciate and allow its mysteries
to unfold.
Solid Energys garden is one of the key features in
the Starlight Marquee, a popular exhibition introduced at
the last Ellerslie Show in Auckland to showcase innovative
and bold outdoor lighting.
This year the Starlight Marquees theme is West Meets
East. Alongside Solid Energys West Coast garden will
be the multiple award-winning exhibition garden Seeking Shangri-La
from the Singapore Garden Festival by talented Asian designer
Peter Cheok.
Solid Energy, as one of New Zealands largest energy
producers, is aware of the impact mining has on the land.
Its operations are planned to minimise this impact and it
annually undertakes a huge amount of work to rehabilitate
its current and former mine sites, as well as supporting community
environmental initiatives.
The companys aim is for the cumulative result of all
its activities to have a positive net effect on the New Zealand
environment. In 2008 alone, Solid Energy planted more than
320,000 native seedlings on its land, sourced from 18 plant
nurseries and propagators, as well as successfully rehabilitating
more than 160 hectares of land. The company also contributed
$100,000 to the Department of Conservations blue duck
recovery effort on the West Coast.
Through its research, Solid
Energy is pioneering erosion control techniques and developing
better ways to ensure plants are able to become established
and grow.
