Ellerslie International Flower Show to
host top Ikebana artist
One of the worlds top Ikebana artists Seiseki
Yoshiro Umemura will provide the crowds at the Ellerslie
International Flower Show with twice daily demonstrations
of the Japanese art of flower arranging.
Japanese-born, Seiseki Umemura migrated to Australia in 1986
and wanting to bring part of his culture with him swapped
careers as a marketing and finance executive to become a master
in Ikebana.
Ikebana is more than just a floral display, behind
the art form are a rich culture, history and philosophy which
form the basis for a way of life, he says.
The Ikebana demonstrations at Ellerslie will be a feature
in the Floral Art Marquee, a perennial favourite at the Show
which again will be full to overflowing this year, displaying
the best in dramatic and artistic floral design.
Seiseki Umemuras demonstrations will focus on introducing
visitors to the hidden beauty and infinite potentialities
of plant material.
Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, is
simply the way of flowers, he says.
The Christchurch Ikebana Society will create a simple Japanese-style
exhibition garden in the Floral Art Marquee, with Japanese
screens and display stands to showcase Mr Umemuras daily
creations.
Seiseki Umemura will hold daily demonstrations at Ellerslie
from 11am and 2pm on 11, 12, 13 and 14 March and 11am on 15
March; and workshops on 13 and 14 March, for details contact
