An All Black’s Crate Escape at Ellerslie

Backyard cricket, a bar and barbecue – it's all part of The Crate Escape exhibition garden being designed by All Black Andy Ellis for the Ellerslie International Flower Show.

The Crusaders and All Black halfback has swapped his rugby boots for gumboots and joined mate Danny Kamo from John Marsh Landscape Architects to design what they say is the ultimate bloke’s back garden or man cave.

“When you think of the outdoors and having a couple of beers in summer it’s always with your mates playing backyard cricket while waiting for the barbecue to heat up,” the duo say.

And not surprisingly, the concept for The Crate Escape was conceived over a couple of beers in the back garden.

Ellis, who is three years into completing his four-year Bachelor of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University, put his design career on hold when four years ago he was called up to play for the Crusaders and then the All Blacks.

“I have always had an interest in design and plants,” he says.

He grew up on five-acres in Harewood, Christchurch, where his grandparents grew asparagus and his parents’ tomatoes. “I always remember being outside doing things in the garden and planting things.”

His mate Danny Kamo – who Ellis met playing touch rugby – grew up in North Canterbury. “Dad always had a massive veggie garden. I remember going out to the garden after school, digging and watering.”

It was remembering these times that influenced Danny to change from a career in commerce eight years ago and return to Lincoln University to complete a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture.

Ellis is excited about designing an exhibition garden for Ellerslie. “The Show has such a big name. My grandparents are big gardeners and have always loved it. I remember my grandmother always talked about Chelsea and Ellerslie.

“It is such as great opportunity for me to now be involved in the Show and get back into doing some gardening.”

Ellis has already designed a number of gardens for family and friends and is working with Danny to create a courtyard garden for the inner city townhouse he and wife Emma have recently bought.

Danny says his grandmother and mum also always talked about the Chelsea and Ellerslie flower shows. “I think it is fantastic for Christchurch that Ellerslie has come south. John Marsh Landscape Architects jumped at the chance to be involved with the Show.”

Danny has recently moved from a classic Avonside villa with a big back garden he completely landscaped to a sloping and overgrown 960sqm hillside home which he is beginning to redevelop.

Designing a garden for Ellerslie, is a chance for both men to create their perfect garden – “a place in which to escape”.

“Every man would love a garden where he and the boys can escape to, play cricket, have a beer or two and enjoy a barbecue. That place is The Crate Escape or our man cave,” they say.
