The Ellerslie Garden Tours
City courtyards, historic cottages or high country homestead

Ellerslie Garden Tour thats sure to capture your imagination.
Seven tours have been organised by the Canterbury
Horticultural Society to showcase during the Ellerslie
International Flower Show some of the best gardens in Canterbury,
reflecting the diversity of the regions landscape and
the evolution of garden design since the area was settled
during the 1850s.
CHS Manager Iain Clark says the tours visit courtyards nestled
into the heart of Christchurchs city centre, magnificent
homesteads built early during settlement of the region and
surrounded by established gardens to cottages steeped in history.
Canterbury has such a rich history, much of which is
revealed in the many significant heritage gardens found throughout
the region. Combined with the areas award-winning contemporary
gardens, these reinforce our international reputation as the
Garden City.
The Ellerslie Garden Tours offers half-day city tours, full-day
country excursions and twilight evening tours to gardens in
Tai Tapu, Banks Peninsula, Ohoka, Ashburton area and inland
high country.
Christchurch Canterbury Tourism CEO Christine Prince says
garden tours are popular with visitors to Christchurch contributing
significantly to the regions tourism earnings.
Garden tours are a key attraction for our global markets,
particularly in Japan, the United Kingdom and Australia. As
we continue to work on regenerating our image as the Garden
City, such tours just keep growing in popularity.
Highlights of the Ellerslie Garden Tours include a visit
to a specialist topiary garden with espaliered trees; the
gardens of Sir
Heaton Rhodes greatest legacy Otahuna; an artists
garden with an outstanding choice of plants and colour; the
strong structure and series of rooms at Governors Bays
Ohinetahi; a 100-year-old Alfred Buxton-designed garden; a
historic cottage with a series of courtyards a hillside garden
for all the seasons and a Heathcote Helmore homestead
with a garden established in 1864.
