The Ellerslie Garden Tours

City courtyards, historic cottages or high country homestead – whatever your interest in garden design there is an Ellerslie Garden Tour that’s sure to capture your imagination.

Seven tours have been organised by the Canterbury Horticultural Society to showcase during the Ellerslie International Flower Show some of the best gardens in Canterbury, reflecting the diversity of the region’s landscape and the evolution of garden design since the area was settled during the 1850s.

CHS Manager Iain Clark says the tours visit courtyards nestled into the heart of Christchurch’s city centre, magnificent homesteads built early during settlement of the region and surrounded by established gardens to cottages steeped in history.

“Canterbury has such a rich history, much of which is revealed in the many significant heritage gardens found throughout the region. Combined with the area’s award-winning contemporary gardens, these reinforce our international reputation as the Garden City.”

The Ellerslie Garden Tours offers half-day city tours, full-day country excursions and twilight evening tours to gardens in Tai Tapu, Banks Peninsula, Ohoka, Ashburton area and inland high country.

Christchurch Canterbury Tourism CEO Christine Prince says garden tours are popular with visitors to Christchurch contributing significantly to the region’s tourism earnings.

“Garden tours are a key attraction for our global markets, particularly in Japan, the United Kingdom and Australia. As we continue to work on regenerating our image as the Garden City, such tours just keep growing in popularity.”

Highlights of the Ellerslie Garden Tours include a visit to a specialist topiary garden with espaliered trees; the gardens of Sir Heaton Rhodes’ greatest legacy Otahuna; an artist’s garden with an outstanding choice of plants and colour; the strong structure and series of rooms at Governor’s Bay’s Ohinetahi; a 100-year-old Alfred Buxton-designed garden; a historic cottage with a series of courtyards a hillside garden for all the seasons’ and a Heathcote Helmore homestead with a garden established in 1864.
