Christchurch
will host its first Ellerslie International Flower Show from 11 to 15 March, 2009.
The five-day extravaganza is expected to attract similar numbers to the 65,000
visitors attending previous shows held in Auckland and generate more than $14
million for the local economy.
This is New Zealands premier
garden event and is a magnificent fit for our city, serving only to enhance Christchurchs
image as the Garden City.
Planning is well underway for this first
icon event in March 2009. I urge everyone to mark the date in your diary now;
it is guaranteed to stimulate the senses with plenty of fresh and exciting ideas.
This mornings unveiling of the 10m x 8m floral garden by the police
kiosk has created an innovative new floral display in the heart of the city at
a time when the city is celebrating the Garden City SummerTimes.
The garden
was designed by Darren Tillett form the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, who also
designed Christchurchs award-winning entry at last years Ellerslie
International Flower Show.
Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive
Christine Prince has welcomed the autumn timing for the show.
From
our perspective, the timing is perfect. Autumn is traditionally a shoulder season
for tourism so its great we now have such a prestigious and internationally
popular event to draw people to the city and region.
She said the
autumn timing will help visitors gain an appreciation of Christchurch as an all-year-round
destination.
Christchurch is often pictured in the spring when the
blossom is out but the city is equally stunning in the autumn.
"Christchurch really is going
to be the place to be in March 2009."
