An introduction to Specific Learning Disabilites
and ADHD
COURSE INFORMATION
To enable those with specific learning disabilities
including DYSLEXIA, ADHD, ADD, and ASPERGERS Syndrome, to first
recognise the condition and then make the learning accomodations
and select techniques.
Learning ability
is maximised when you teach to how each student's brain
works.
The five sessions of 'An Intoduction to Specific
Learning Disabilities including ADHD' are open to the general
public, but is also a compulsory precursor to a further nine days
training for qualified teachers who wish to become SPELADD tutors.
Last year teacher aides and a final year College of Ed student completed
the full course too.
Three videos presented by Richard Lavoie are
shown on the first three days of the course. He has been a teacher
and consultant in the USA since 1972.
With the release of his first video FRUSTRATION, ANXIETY and TENSION
in 1989, what he thought would be a low key affair saw him become
a worldwide consultant in Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and
Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD and ADHD)
I was fortunate to attend a seminar Richard presented
in 2004. He emphasised that he had noticed that the teachers and
parents who had the most success with students with special needs,
had knowledge in this field, a basic philosophy or belief system
and a wide variety of techniques.
Dr Steve Humphries ( a Doctor of psychology)
currently teaches and does post doctorate research at Massey. In
1998 he completed our teacher training course. He has presented
the neurology section at our subsequent courses. Teachers and parents
who've heard Steve's presentation agree that an awareness of neurological
background is essential for understanding the learning process for
all students.
In 1977, after 9 years primary teaching, I trained
as a SPELD teacher. In the late 1980's I began teaching night classes
for parents and teachers about recognising and assisting those with
SLD and eventally, AD / HD. Family life stopped that for some years
until 2003 when I took a series over 18 hours. This included working
with those with Asperger's Syndrome.
During that break, I'd become the liaison officer for SPELD, and
since 1999, SPELADD. I also edited and wrote some of the puzzling
children, a book especially for busy classroom teachers to identify
and help students with SLD and AD / HD. This book, and the newsletter
I produce bi-monthly, is used by teachers, RTLB'S and parents all
over the country.
I will be the main presenter for the Introduction to SLD course.

Elizabeth Manson
