Herb of the Week for 11th May
Floral Message of Love
By Lynn Kirkland
The day to salute our Mums is this Sunday
and if the marketing people have had their
way some Mums will be opening up presents
of big televisions or vacuum cleaners
or diamond rings!
For those who want a simpler approach
how about a genuine message of love such
as a handmade card or breakfast in bed
or a posy from the garden?
Throughout history flowers have been regarded
as gestures of romance or loving thoughts.
The rose has to be the flower that is
most associated with love and if you check
out a book on the language of flowers
you will even find that different colours
of roses have different meanings.
Red roses are usually the ones associated
with romance.
To me a rose like the one in the photo,
Moonlight, is a lovely salutation to mothers.
The creamy colour reminds of pure love
which mums give to their children whatever
age they are.
The delicate scent is, like a mothers
love, gentle and persistent.
This rose flowers throughout each season,
making it a joy to have in the garden
giving pleasure nearly all year.
It does make it tricky to prune as it
always seems hard to prune plants when
they are still producing blooms.
Our Moonlight bushes at the herb farm
are about two metres high and get a light
pruning later in the year.
The creamy coloured flowers are a lovely
feature of this rose as is the bronze
foliage.
A healthy rose bush which needs no attention
really apart from the attention you give
it on admiring it in your garden.
Why not pick Mum some flowers and write
a lovely heartfelt message and I am sure
it will be appreciated by your Mum.
I salute my own beautiful mother who,
now in her eighties, continues to love
her children, grandchildren and great
grand children with unconditional love.
Happy Mothers Day to all Mums everywhere.
