Ben Hoyle and his award winning 2006 Ellerslie Garden In July 2006 Kate
Hillier exhibition manager of the Ellerslie
International Flower show approached him about the Singapore Garden Festival
and from that moment began his journey with this event. The theme of Bens
garden explores the history of Aotearoa New Zealand and as you can see in the
image is a rectangular shape. Its title is Kakariki in Sheeps clothing. Its been
a full on experience designing and organizing the garden, and then the logistics
of exporting it to Singapore. The
normal sized site at the show is 100m2 or 10x10 mtrs, Bens site is 20x5mtrs and
has allowed him to display his story from start to finish. Once this layout
was finalized, the ordering of components could go ahead. Four and a half kilometer's
of wool yarn, and acrylic from Australia. Plants from New Zealand from North Island
growers and Ferns from the South Islands West Coast were then obtained. Ben
was able to travel to Singapore in March and again in July to sort out local contractors
and other issues associated with his display and the festival. Mid June 2008
and the display was loaded into a 40' temperature controlled container and shipped
to Singapore. The Singapore Government has covered the total costs involved
with this endeavor. It allows designers to extend there skills and bring them
together for the benefit of the global public, it must be the gardening event
of the year. Thank you Singapore.
