MEDIA RELEASE January 21th 2009

Ellerslie goes bush to save our natural habitat
In a rustic shed at the Ellerslie International Flower Show
the threat to New Zealands native biodiversity will
be discussed over a cup of tea and bit of cake.
Forty interviews on various conservation topics will be filmed
by Bush Telly before a live audience the thousands
of visitors to the Show at the bottom of the garden,
for distribution in April on YouTube, Google Video and DVD.
Bush Telly, the natural history media unit of the New
Zealand Ecological Restoration Network (NZERN), will record
the interviews while having a yarn to the real people
involved in saving New Zealands native plants and animals.
NZERN is a non-profit community organisation which supports
the work of the thousands of individuals, families and groups
who have taken on projects to protect and restore areas of
native habitat, such as Riccarton Bush Trust, Travis Wetland
Trust and Summit Road Society.
Bush Telly Producer Mike Peters says the aim of the exhibit
it to raise public awareness and encourage everyone to do
their bit to look after our native plants and animals.
Topics for discussion will include how to make a weta
motel, how to create a lizard friendly habitat, how to propagate
aquatic plants, the breeding and release of endangered species,
how to trap possums, how to control weeds, how to erect a
predator-proof fence, and what native plants can be used for
medicine or food.
He says those being interviewed will be invited into the
shed, adjoining nursery or down to the stream for a cup of
tea and a chat about their topic of interest.
It will be a relaxed interview designed to be both
informative and educational.
Mr Peters says it is hoped visitors to Ellerslie will be
inspired to become involved in helping to protect or restore
an area of native habitat within their own community.
The interviews will be held every hour, on the hour, during
the five days of Ellerslie. A schedule of topics will be posted
on the website www.bushtelly.org.nz
and be displayed on their stand in the Hort Galore
Marquee.
Mr Peters says it is planned to return to Ellerslie each
year to build a complete library of interviews on how to protect,
maintain and restore New Zealands natural heritage.
